Photo Analysis.
The photographer for this piece is Al fisher. This picture is called "The Mime" and was photographed in 1984. As he shopped, Fisher saw these street performers The man in the picture is a Boston street performer which was Fisher's specialty because he wanted to unveil the "man under the mask". The setting was in a room that had a dark back drop with studio lights. This picture is composed of a man that is a mime street performer. Al fisher was determined to show people who these performers are under their masks and make up.
The piece gives you a sense of confidence and understanding. It makes you feel as though you're able to be who you are and it doesn't matter how people see you because what you feel about yourself is the most important. This photograph shows the feeling that this man is proud to be who he is even though people don't see him as anything more than a measly street performer. His posture, straight back, square shoulders, and kind of a sly smile gives that sense of pride and it shows that he doesn't care about what other people think about him. The mood of this piece is inspirational as well as powerful. It shows that originality is still alive and that you should be proud of who you are no matter what. I believe that Fisher wants his audience to feel inspired and not care about what other people think of them.
Al Fisher has always been interested in "piercing the facade" of those street performers after that day of shopping at Quincy market. He believed that they were interesting people and he wanted to show who they were underneath. I really enjoy this photograph because the artist can really appeal to his audience. He shows how people are still struggling with trying to figure out who they are. It helps the audience to feel that they are understood and that they aren't alone.
The light in this photograph is coming from the left and falling gracefully upon the subject to give that soft look. The photo has shadows on the other side of the performer's face. I believe the picture is neither over or under exposed. The photograph is in perfect focus. There is no special effects in the photo. The camera was straight on the subject while the subject is turned to the side. It is compositionally astounding. It's a simple photo, but the meaning behind it is very complex. The picture is stronger as a vertical photo rather than a horizontal photo. The most successful part of this photo is the simplicity of the man and the color. The picture's meaning is very complex and very important. Be who you are.
